Road-use note: Aftermarket HID kits are projector-first upgrades. HID bulbs in reflector housings can create uncontrolled glare because the reflector usually cannot control the HID arc the same way it controls a halogen filament. Confirm housing type, aim, wiring, heat, fitment, CANBUS needs, dust-cap clearance, and local road-use rules before installing any HID conversion.
The DDM Tuning Plus / Ultra is the HID kit that makes the premium options a little uncomfortable. It is not the highest-scoring kit in the chart, and it is not the most polished package, but the measured output is close enough that the value is hard to ignore.
In the current BulbFacts HID data, DDM measured 532 low beam lux and 2935 high beam lux. Compared with the halogen projector reference at 284 low lux and 935 high lux, that is a major upgrade.
The Plus kit is the value buy. The Ultra / Hylux version steps up the ballast package. In our current 35W ballast test data, the Plus and Ultra share the same output numbers, so the decision mostly comes down to price, ballast preference, and how much kit quality you want to pay for.
Overall HID kit score
Strong value-focused HID result. The score reflects near-premium projector output, clean 5150K color, and a much lower price than the premium kits.
Close to the premium kits for a lot less money
DDM is not the chart winner, but it is the easy value play.
Projector performance is the reason this kit is recommended. In the current 35W ballast test, we measured DDM Plus / Ultra at 532 low beam lux and 2935 high beam lux, compared with the halogen projector reference of 284 low lux and 935 high lux.
That is about an 87% low-beam gain and a 214% high-beam gain over the reference setup. The low beam should be a very noticeable upgrade in the right projector housing, and the high beam has the kind of reach that makes halogen projectors feel weak by comparison.
The premium kits can beat it, but DDM gets close enough that the price matters. Morimoto XB Elite 2.0 measured 554 low lux and 3088 high lux; GTR Lighting Ultra HID measured 601 low lux and 2966 high lux. DDM is not far behind, especially considering the price difference.


Strong low beam, very strong high beam for the money
DDM gives up some premium polish, but not a huge amount of measured output.
The DDM kit is strong in both low beam and high beam, but the high beam result is especially impressive for the price.
The 532 low lux result is close to Morimoto XB Elite 2.0 at 554 low lux. GTR is stronger at 601 low lux, but it also costs much more.
The 2935 high lux result is also very close to the premium kits. Morimoto measured 3088 high lux, and GTR measured 2966 high lux. For the driver, that should mean a projector HID upgrade that feels legitimately strong without requiring premium-kit money.
Best overall value, not the premium-output leader
DDM sits below the top premium picks, but the value gap is the point.
Morimoto XB Elite 2.0 is the premium distance pick. It measured 554 low lux and 3088 high lux, tested at 5000K, is estimated around $311, and carries a 5-year warranty. Morimoto is stronger, especially on high beam, but not by a huge amount.
GTR Lighting Ultra HID is the premium alternative with stronger low beam output and a lifetime warranty. It measured 601 low lux, 2966 high lux, and 5040 lumens, with an estimated $329 price. DDM is close on high beam and much cheaper.
XtremeVision is older-test budget context, not the same kind of current recommendation. It measured 431 low lux, 1575 high lux, and 7150K, with an estimated $70 price. DDM is much stronger and cleaner in color.
That does not make DDM the premium benchmark. It makes it the sensible first stop when you want strong projector HID performance without premium pricing.
Overall HID kit score compared
DDM sits below the premium-score cluster, but close enough on measured lux that it stays the value pick. XenonDepot is the top-rated chart entry, Xentec is the low-score anchor, and GTR plus Morimoto are the premium recommendations to compare against.
Choose Plus for value, Ultra/Hylux for the ballast package
Our current 35W ballast test uses the same output numbers for Plus and Ultra, so the decision is about package and price.
The Plus Kit is listed around $90-108, which is why it earns the overall value recommendation. It has the same 4.1 score, 5150K tested color, and broad size support shown in the current data.
The Ultra / Hylux Kit is listed around $120. Pick it if you specifically want the step-up ballast package. Otherwise, the Plus kit is the cleaner value choice.
Both entries list a CANBUS option, 35W ballast-tested HID power, silent operation, and common halogen fitments including H1, H3, H4 / 9003, H7, H8 / H9 / H11, H13 / 9008, 9005 / HB3, 9006 / HB4, 9007 / HB5, and 9012 / HIR2.
CANBUS should still be treated as vehicle-specific. Some vehicles may still need a relay harness, CANBUS components, decoders, or extra wiring support.


5150K is a clean, useful white
This is one reason DDM holds up better than many older budget HID kits.

The tested 5150K color lands in the useful white range. It is clean and modern without turning into an extreme blue HID look, and it is much more reasonable for night driving than the 6500K-plus budget kits in the older roundup.
Measured output was 4625 lumens, which supports the strong projector lux numbers. This is not just a kit that looks brighter because it is whiter than halogen; it actually measured strong.
If you are shopping DDM options, stay close to the 4500K to 5500K range for usable road lighting. Higher Kelvin is not brighter; it mostly makes the beam bluer and less useful.
35W HID testing with a CANBUS option
The output is strong, but fitment and wiring still matter.
The DDM Plus / Ultra data is based on 35W HID ballast testing. That is the right baseline for most everyday projector HID conversions: a quality 35W setup can make a big jump over halogen without moving into the extra heat and stress concerns that can come with higher-wattage HID ballasts.
The kit has a CANBUS option available, which can help vehicles that are sensitive to bulb-out warnings, flicker, startup behavior, or other electrical issues after switching from halogen to HID. Treat that as vehicle-specific, though. Some applications may still need a relay harness, decoders, or other wiring support.
HID kits are more involved than halogen bulb swaps. You need room for the bulb, wiring, ballast, igniter, grommets, and dust-cap routing. A clean install should be mounted securely and protected from moisture, heat, and loose wiring.
Normal HID warm-up behavior still applies
With HID, you are buying a system, not just a bulb.
HID kits do not turn on exactly like halogen or LED bulbs. A halogen bulb reaches output almost instantly, and an LED usually turns on bright right away. HID needs to ignite, warm up, stabilize, and settle into its final color and brightness.
During the first few seconds, the color and brightness can shift. A good HID setup should do this smoothly and consistently without flickering, struggling to ignite, or showing a big color mismatch side to side.
That is part of why the ballast package matters. DDM is attractive because it gives strong HID performance without premium-kit pricing, but it still needs to be installed like a real HID kit, not like a quick halogen swap.
The output gap is smaller than the price gap
Price is the main reason DDM stands out.
The Plus kit is usually around $90-108. The Ultra / Hylux version is usually around $120. That is far less than the premium HID options: Morimoto XB Elite 2.0 is around $311, and GTR Lighting Ultra HID is around $329.
DDM does not quite match the premium kits in overall package quality, brand polish, warranty story, or premium positioning. But the output gap is much smaller than the price gap.
