OSRAM Night Breaker Laser vs OEM Halogen Bulbs

Historical Video Review Published December 9, 2017 Updated May 31, 2026

The Night Breaker Laser had a big name, but the original BulbFacts review found that it did not beat OSRAM's best halogen options at the time. The updated chart data gives a cleaner look at where it sits now.

Quick Take

The original Night Breaker Laser is better than a basic reference bulb, but it is not the strongest OSRAM halogen in the current data. It is a reasonable older upgrade if you already have it, while the Night Breaker 200 is the better current output pick.

Current Chart Snapshot

  • Reflector score: 3.2, with 439 low lux and 1078 high lux.
  • Projector score: 3.2, with 311 low lux and 1195 high lux.
  • Measured color: 3625K, slightly whiter than the 3425K reference.
  • Estimated lifespan: 1.5 years, with limited listed sizes in the current data.

The original review compared the OSRAM Night Breaker Laser against basic OEM-style halogen bulbs for brightness, whiteness, and cost. The short version then was simple: it was an upgrade over stock, but not the best OSRAM bulb BulbFacts had tested.

That conclusion still holds up pretty well. The current chart shows the Laser improving on the basic OSRAM Original reference, but newer and stronger OSRAM options now give shoppers better choices depending on whether they care most about low beam, high beam, lifespan, or availability.

Current Reflector Data

Better than stock, but not a chart leader

In reflector headlights, the Night Breaker Laser improves output and color, but the Night Breaker 200 is the stronger current OSRAM result.

OSRAM Night Breaker Laser

Current reflector data shows a 3.2 score, 439 low lux, 1078 high lux, 3625K color, and 1618 lumens. It is above the reference bulb, but the numbers are modest next to the current leaders.

OSRAM Night Breaker 200

The Night Breaker 200 is stronger in the current reflector chart, with a 4.2 score, 536 low lux, 1312 high lux, and 1740 lumens. It is the better starting point if maximum halogen output is the goal.

4.2 score536 low lux1312 high lux1740 lumens

In the original article, the Laser came out about 13% brighter than basic stock bulbs, but it fell behind the older Night Breaker Unlimited. The current reflector chart is a little more nuanced, but the basic idea remains: the Laser is useful, not exceptional.

Compared with the OSRAM Original reference at 373 low lux and 876 high lux, the Laser's 439 low lux and 1078 high lux are a measurable improvement. It does not, however, reach the Night Breaker 200's 536 low lux and 1312 high lux.

Color is also only a mild improvement. The Laser measures 3625K, compared with the reference bulb's 3425K. That is slightly cleaner, but still a normal halogen look.

Laser Next Gen

The newer Laser is not automatically the best choice either

The current chart includes Night Breaker Laser Next Gen, and it is worth comparing before buying by name alone.

The Night Breaker Laser Next Gen has a current reflector score of 3.3, with 448 low lux, 1159 high lux, 3525K color, and 1466 lumens. That is slightly better than the older Laser in reflector scoring, but it still does not replace the Night Breaker 200 as the stronger current output pick.

It does list more sizes in the current data, including H1, H7, H8, H11, 9003, 9005, and 9006-style applications. That can matter if your vehicle uses a size the older Laser does not cover.

Projector Data

Projector results are decent, but still housing-dependent

In projector-style halogen headlights, the older Night Breaker Laser currently scores 3.2, with 311 low lux, 1195 high lux, 3625K color, and 1618 lumens. Compared with the OSRAM Original projector baseline of 284 low lux and 935 high lux, both low and high beam improve.

The Laser Next Gen is not clearly better in projectors. It scores 3.0, with 281 low lux and 1262 high lux. That higher high beam may look attractive, but the lower low beam means the best pick still depends on your housing and priorities.

Value and Lifespan

The name is premium, but the value is mixed

The original article pointed out that the Laser came in fewer sizes than some other OSRAM options. The current data still shows the older Laser as a limited-size product, with H4 and H7 listed, while Laser Next Gen expands coverage.

The older Laser is shown with a 1.5 year estimated lifespan and an estimated $20-34 price range. That is shorter than the OSRAM Original reference, which is shown at 4 years. As usual with performance halogens, you trade some bulb life for more output.

Bottom Line

A usable OSRAM upgrade, but not the one I would start with today

The OSRAM Night Breaker Laser is brighter than a basic OEM-style halogen and slightly whiter, so it is not a bad bulb. The problem is that it does not stand out strongly enough in the current chart to be the default OSRAM recommendation.

If you already have a set or find them at a good price, they can still be a reasonable replacement. If you are buying today and want the strongest current halogen option, compare the Night Breaker 200 and the current recommended halogen list first.
